Understanding How Dental Insurance Works
Unlike medical insurance, dental insurance is meant to be actively used on a regular basis. Many people only utilize their medical insurance when they need to treat an urgent or emergency issue, such as an injury or serious illness. However, dental insurance is meant to be used to complete routine, preventive care, such as exams, cleanings, and X-rays. By recognizing this early, you can ensure your dental dollars are used to the fullest.
What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers
Every dental plan will have its own unique stipulations that you’ll need to review ahead of time. However, most plans tend to operate in the same way in terms of coverage. This breakdown typically looks like the following:
-
Preventive Care – Covered at or close to 100% and usually includes exams, cleanings, X-rays, and sometimes fluoride therapy.
-
Minor Restorative Care – Covers between 70% and 80% of costs and typically refers to dental fillings and sometimes root canal therapy.
-
Major Restorative Care – Covers up to 50% of costs and tends to include dental crowns, bridges, and dentures.
