Fear of pain can be a strong motivator not to do something. You know if you touch a hot stove you’ll get burned, and many a childhood summer probably taught you that doing a bellyflop into the pool is going to sting! By and large, however, these uncomfortable outcomes serve no purpose. But when it comes to cosmetic dentistry, that same fear of discomfort could be holding you back from something very positive. Worse yet, in most cases it’s not even true. Here’s why when it’s time to make over your smile, you shouldn’t let fear stop you from doing a good thing!
Pain Points
Because cosmetic dentistry is relatively non-invasive, it often does not cause any pain. Certain treatments may cause temporary sensitivity in some (but not all) patients, like professional teeth whitening, but this typically goes away after about a week.
For other procedures like veneers, your dentist does need to remove a small layer of enamel from your teeth, however you will be numbed for this procedure, and any sensitivity should also stop once your permanent veneers are placed.
Other treatments like dental bonding should be completely pain free.
How to Treat Pain
Thankfully, while most cosmetic procedures are painless, if you do have any lingering discomfort following yours, it can be easily managed by an over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
Another method some patients find useful is applying cold compresses to the mouth. To do this, hold an ice pack outside your mouth over the area treated for 15 to 20 minutes as needed.
If you are experiencing tooth sensitivity, there are a few things you can try to help minimize the discomfort, including brushing your teeth with a sensitive toothpaste, and avoiding acidic, overly sweet, cold, or hot foods and beverages for at least a few days after your procedure.
Remember, most cosmetic dentistry procedures are relatively painless, and any discomfort can usually be treated with OTC pain medications. In fact, most patients who have these treatments feel like any discomfort was well worth the results of their smile makeover!
