Are your teeth discolored? Have you tried over-the-counter white strips or whitening toothpastes but still aren’t getting any results? The truth is that there are several types of tooth stains, and some of them simply won’t budge with store bought products. If you’re looking to lighten up your smile, keep reading to see what kind you might have and how to finally get those pearly whites back!

What are the Three Main Types of Tooth Stains

Depending on the cause of your discoloration, some types may be easier than others to correct.

Extrinsic Stains

Extrinsic stains are generally the easiest to treat because they are only on the surface of your teeth.  They are typically caused by:

  • Tobacco
  • Food
  • Beverages

Intrinsic Stains

Intrinsic stains occur inside the teeth, making them harder to remove. They can be caused by several issues, including:

  • Tooth injury or trauma
  • Excessive fluoride exposure
  • Genetics
  • Tooth decay
  • Certain medications

Age

As you age, your enamel slowly wears away, causing discoloration and yellowing. Age-related staining can also be caused by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors.

Treating Tooth Stains

The good news is that no matter why your teeth are stained, your dentist has a solution. While extrinsic stains can often lift with a professional whitening treatment like Zoom! or with take-home trays, intrinsic and age-related discoloration may require a more permanent intervention such as veneers or bonding.

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are custom fitted to your teeth. They are available in a variety of shades of white, and they can even be used to correct minor imperfections in the shape and size of your teeth. Veneers are harder to stain than natural teeth and can last up to 20 years with proper care.

Bonding uses a resin composite to help rebuild your teeth. It can correct chips, cracks, and even improve tooth color. While it does need to be replaced every five to ten years, it is very durable and budget friendly.

Get Ready for Your Closeup

If you’re tired of wasting time and money on ineffective storebought whitening products, speak to your dentist about your professional options.  Depending on what type of stains you have, he or she can help you find an effective solution that will leave you grinning from ear to ear!
