If so, you are making an excellent investment in your oral health and quality of life. However, during the treatment process, you will hear many different terms that can be a bit confusing. To help you better understand the process and what your dentist is discussing, here are some of the key terms related to dental implants in Hamden.

Abutment: This is a connector piece between the implant post and the dental crown. It builds up the top of the dental implant to help keep the crown firmly in place.

Abutment Teeth: If a partial denture or bridge is used, the teeth that support it are known as the abutment teeth. Either crowns or clasps are placed on them to hold the prosthetic teeth in place.

Ceramic: The dental crowns are made from a ceramic material because it closely looks like natural teeth. In addition, some implant posts are made from it to help attach it to the jawbone, especially if there are known metal allergies.

Crown: This is the cap that is connected to the implant crown to fill the empty space. It will be made to match your exact specifications in terms of size, shape, and color to create a natural-looking smile.

Dentures: Dentures replace a complete arch of teeth. In addition to traditional dentures, they can also be supported by an average of four implant posts to anchor them in place.

Endosteal Implant: This is the most commonly used implant to replace a single tooth. It is surgically placed into the jawbone to provide a secure and stable foundation for the replacement tooth.

Eposteal Implant: This type of implant rests on the jawbone and is not widely used. However, for those with advanced bone loss, it may be a better option than a traditional implant post.

Implant: Also known as a fixture, it integrates with your jawbone to potentially permanently replace your missing teeth.

Osseointegration: This is the process that occurs when the jawbone fuses to the implant post due to stimulating new bone growth.

Subperiosteal Implant: This form of implant sits on top of the jaw, which uses a metal framework that protrudes through the gum tissue. It is often used when there is a significant loss to bone height.

Titanium: Now, most dental implant posts are made from titanium because it is a biocompatible material. It is also lightweight and strong, allowing it to stay in place for several years with the right care.
